Press Release
Determining if Your News is Newsworthy
The heart of news is ... well, news. If it's not new, most likely it's not news. So it makes sense that the best way to approach your particular news for a company press release is to search for what's new. Step back and look at your company, products or services, industry, marketplace, and local area to truly see what has changed or developed recently.
Have there been any recent changes in your company, product, or industry? Are there any trends on the horizon for your industry and how is your company addressing these trends? Or is your company actually affecting the trends? Is your company doing something now that it wasn't doing a year ago?Have there been any recent surveys, research, or studies completed by your company or relevant to your industry? Are there any happenings in your local area that your company is involved with?Have there been any shifts in management or ownership? Is there a current news story that your company is somehow related to?With any press release that addresses a change, it's not enough to just state the development. Explain all five W's - who, what, when, where, and why. Get specific.
For example: Who was involved? Who initiated the change? Who does it affect? Who will benefit? Who will corroborate your claims or findings?
However, the most important question to ask yourself is, "How does this change affect people outside of my company?" If you don't have a compelling answer for that, you might not have a good foundation for a press release. Will this affect others in the community and how?
By taking the time to dig deep into the story and provide accurate information to journalists, you are making their job easy to do-which will up your odds of getting picked up.
